Record companies sign contracts in order to protect the rights of their musicians. Getting rid of DRM would make it too easy to copy music, and take money away from the people who created it. Legally, it's their music and they have every right to sell it however they please. Also, I like knowing that music that I have purchased won't work for anyone else. This makes it valuable to me alone and helps prevent theft. I'm not saying that DRM is perfect, but there needs to be some form of copy-protection in place or it will become a free for all. Less bands will be signed, less music will be produced, and less money will go to musicians.
