The world of open source operating systems has never been so impressive. Average consumers may soon start switching over, it's not just for nerds or IT guys anymore. Some of the new builds that have been coming out are so sophisticated that they rival Vista or OS X. There's just one major difference: they're free. A huge community of programmers are constantly updating the code, and Linux is already known as a rock-solid server OS. Someday we may live in a world where open source programs outnumber the over priced, bloated OS's that have become the norm.

How many people in the world use linux ? Its just used by geeks ... not all geeks .. a significant number of geeks use mac. Linux has nice applications and the GUIs are getting there. But its not yet as friendly and intuitive as windows. You cannot expect novice users to read readme.txt and modify etc.conf with a vi editor. Linux is maturing but long way to go before I can agree and vote for your opinion. Till then, guys vote for me and lemme win this argument.
Sure, open source is great because it's free. But that's just about all that's good about it. Remember, you get what you pay for. Linux is just too complicated for normal people, period. People want to pop in an installation disk and go. People want their software to work right out of the box, and for all of its advances, Linux has never been able to solve this basic problem. There's also the problem of the various distros, which are intimidating to users. Also, if you ever have a problem, good luck gettng anything useful out of the fussy programmers who make up the Linux community. Maybe someday Linux will have a chance, but that day is not today.
