The music industry needs to lift the absurd restrictions they have placed on their forays into Internet sales. Music downloads account for only about 10% of sales. If they would simply drop the restrictions these numbers would definitely climb. Considering the other 90% of sales are made with no DRM whatsoever, it seems like a no-brainer. Why would anyone want to pay for something that's hard to use when they can just have an open version for free. Illegal music downloads are still much more common than legal ones, and if the music industry and the RIAA want to change that, doing away with DRM would be the first logical step.

Record companies sign contracts in order to protect the rights of their musicians. Getting rid of DRM would make it too easy to copy music, and take money away from the people who created it. Legally, it's their music and they have every right to sell it however they please. Also, I like knowing that music that I have purchased won't work for anyone else. This makes it valuable to me alone and helps prevent theft. I'm not saying that DRM is perfect, but there needs to be some form of copy-protection in place or it will become a free for all. Less bands will be signed, less music will be produced, and less money will go to musicians.
