One thing Americans seem to think for sure it that we are here to stay. Americans are American, and God knows we've been here for all of four centuries, so that'll last forever. But countless civilizations have risen and fallen with time, from the Mayans to the Romans, plus all the other continents they don't bother to teach about in school. There's argument to say that many of these societies collapsed at least partly because of environmental problems - but don't worry, I'm not going there. Point is, there's nothing to say that global warming won't smush the United States, or at least the United States as it is now. I figure it'll work out best if we start preparing now, and promote positive societal change instead of keeping our wasteful American ways. The world is getting used up, so we might as well clean up the mess we've made to save what we've got left. We all have to change our habits, and focus on what's best for all of us. Either that, or more of us will die. At least, that's my guess.

Environmental problems have nothing to do with the fall of Rome. Rome fell because their leaders got lazy and forgot how to get things done. It has been shown time and time again that in order to compete in the new global market, we need to let corporations operate freely and not hog-tie them with restrictions.
Science hasn't ever really been able to prove the existence of global warming anyway. In my opinion this is just a bunch of liberal scare tactics. Technology is going to save us from problems like sustainability and disappearing fossil fuels.
In any case, the solution is not to hamstring our businesses and by doing so kill our economy.
